Facebook and Medical Practices

If you’re like most of the medical community, you’ve seen the excitement and energy around Facebook and thought to yourself that it’s not relevant in your world. Maybe your teenage daughter’s world.  The Justin Bieber world. The consumer packaged goods world. The world of marketing and advertising and communications and media. But not your medical world.

On the contrary, I argue that social media - Facebook, in particular - are extremely relevant to your medical practice, and it would be unwise to ignore this fast-growing communication channel.

Half a billion people around the world use Facebook once a month.  The average user is connected to 80 community pages, groups and events, according to the Facebook PR folks.  Now brace yourselves for this fact: The average Facebook user is 38 years old. In fact, 60% of the social network’s users are 35 or older! No longer just a site for college students, Facebook is now a portal for community networking.  Your patient community, I dare say.

A medical practice's most powerful referral tool is happy patients – I highly doubt that’s news to any of you. Facebook gives you the opportunity to leverage that power. Happy patients “like” you on Facebook and their entire network has visibility to your practice’s Facebook page. Most importantly, they are made aware of their friend’s endorsement of your practice. Word of mouth referrals just got bigger and better.
